Art Wall Inspiration

I had promised my client I would send her some art wall inspiration for her new library.  She has blown up some jacket covers of some of her favorite authors (Dorothy Parker being her favorite) and now it's time to have them framed.  There has been a lot to talk about what kind of frames should be used.  Should they match, should they not match but go together, should they be a big ol' hodgepodge of anything goes.  Knowing my client I doubt that it will be a hodgepodge but I thought I'd show her some options and some of my comments about how they could work for her.  I also want to give a quick shout-out to Ally at From the Right Bank who always has a great collection of art wall inspiration.  I borrowed liberally from her so that I could show my client something quickly.  Thanks Ally!

Here's a good example of subtle matting and framing.  They aren't all exactly alike but they blend together as one overall piece.

Here are different types of larger scale art, framed differently on a darker wall. - on a side note this room makes me really happy!

This is my kitchen.  It's a mix of mostly white frames, a few silver frames, and a mix of mats.  Theses are all black and white family photos but the same idea could apply to art with color as well.

This was actually the inspiration for my art wall.  I especially love the oval frames mixed in too.  I haven't gotten my oval frame hung yet.  I still need to paint it white!

A mix of art and frames but all within the same color palette.

A series of black and white photos without frames, this could be an idea for grouping of some of the ephemera you have in the family room.

I really love this grouping on the dark wall.  Again, there is also a mix of frames and types of art used.

These last couple are showing brighter, more colorful art with a mix of frames.

Still a mix of frames...

and if you frame things more consistently - in this case all in white.

Now it's time to decide how we are going to about getting everything framed.  Happy Friday everyone!

And Now Back to Our Show...

Hello Blogland!  I have been away for what seems a very long time.  I had a lovely spring break getaway with my Husband and his family last week.  Now I am desperately trying to play catch-up to everything that got dropped while I was away.

Now that the pollen is in full bloom (as are my allergies, yuck!) and our yard is actually green (hallelujah!) I'm starting to think about outside projects again.  Let's pretend that this is really what the house and garden look like.

This, of course, is Wendy Posard's home from the March 2008 Cottage Living.  It's been all over for a long time now but I'm still pretending that it's mine.  I guess I should treat myself to a new pair of gardening gloves and get to work!

What I Saw

Here are a few things that caught my eye this week while out shopping for clients.  First up is a lovely oval mirror that almost came home to live with me.

It was only $40 at Marshall's and it would have worked well over my current fireplace mantel.  Sadly, I wasn't in the mood to pull the trigger on this one.  I didn't feel that internal green light that says "YES, I must have this!"

I found this one at Pier 1.  It also makes me want to bring it home a little bit.

It has such a great shape and has a really subtle gold tone on the edges that's really warm and lovely.  I still have high hopes for this one.

I also ran across my my favorite upholstered bed in Williams & Sherrill.  They have beautiful fabrics and home furnishings.  I always leave there feeling like I want, I want, I want!

I really do love this bed.  I want it for my guest room that is next on the docket for an update.  This, of course, is nowhere near making my budget for the room.  I keep thinking there has to be a way for me to recreate this with a little DIY magic.  I'm definitely going to keep thinking about it.

Happy Blogiversary!

My little experiment into blogdom has officially been around for a year now!!   It has been fun to talk about the things that I love and to meet other people who love it too.  It's also been hard to find my voice and to find my Muse on a not-quite daily basis.  Overall it's been a great learning experience for me. Most days I still feel like I've just started and I'm still trying to work out the kinks.  Thank you, thank you to all who read the Functional Space.  It means so much to me that you are here.  Here's to the year ahead, cheers!!

Needs To Go, Indeed

So I had a real design related post percolating in my brain for today, but while I was in Home Depot yesterday looking for shelf brackets (more about that soon, I hope!) I came across something else.

That's right, it's the 8'X10' Santa rug that you always wanted.  Take special note of the handmade sign.

Yes, I agree.  This needs to go.  As my friend Brad would say, "Now that's funny."  Happy Friday everyone. Have a great weekend!

In Progress: A New Master Suite in the Works

Yesterday I had a meeting at a jobsite that is in full swing.  Thought you might enjoy taking a peak at the progress (I promise, one day I will actually have finished pictures to show!)  We converted the son's bedroom into a dressing room and bath for the new master suite.  The bedroom is a new addition to the house.

New Bath Under Construction by DesignLine Home Transformations

It's going to be really lovely (I know you can look past the tile supplies and the floor protectors!)  The Homeowner chose a really beautiful marble to use in the bath.  But I think my favorite part is the new freestanding tub.  That is definitely on my wishlist for a dream bathroom!

New Dressing Room

What a beautiful new space to get yourself together in the morning.  The idea behind this area was to make it more masculine with dark, rich cabinetry and floors.  A great cushion for the window seat, a beautiful shade for the window and new rug will complete this space.

Now I'll show you one more sneak peak.  This is the view from the dressing room into the new master bedroom.  This is the part that is all brand new.  The original plan was to keep the new area as much like the old one as possible (molding details, ceiling heights, etc.) so that it felt like it had always been a part of the house.  But when the clients saw the space being built they new they wanted to capture as much volume as possible with the new ceiling.  The volume of the new room is wonderful.

MCP Project: 52 {week 14}

Here's this week's entry into my year long photo project.

14/52: Fusion

This the the view I see when I look over to my Sweet Husband's side of the desk in our office.  It's how the work gets done around here.  The theme this week was Fusion.  I edited this photo using the free mini-fusion action set created by Jodi Friedman of MCP Actions.  I really REALLY hope to win the full Fusion action set from the Project 52 contest this week.  I only have a basic understanding of how my old photoshop works.  It's amazing what actions can do and Jodi has a lot of great ones in her shop.  You should check them out.

Friday Inspiration

I thought I'd start this Friday Inspiration off with a little something closer to home.  I've been thinking about our guest bedroom for awhile now.  It needs an overhaul and I'm working on finding my Muse for the room.  Here's what I'm thinking at the moment.  I, of course, reserve the right to change my mind immediately after posting this.

1. my own 1/4 sized dress form and my Granny's dresser  2. white dove paint  3. Squirrel Prints from the New York Public Library collection here and here  4. new burlap drapes  5. my own leather chair, here's something similar  6. a comfy throw  7. Nickel plated ceramic urn lamps  8. new duvet cover in a very fresh blue and white  9. my dream bed - which I can no longer get but this one is similar

I really love this blue and white palette at the moment.  It's very fresh and classic.  It makes me want to throw open the windows and let some air in.  I'm also waiting for Spring to get here (for real!)  and that might have something to do with my current feelings too.   Oh, and those squirrel prints?  That's a nod to the Squirrel Mafia that lives in our yard and occasionally tries to eat the house.  Maybe showing them some "respect" will keep them at bay this year!

Happy Friday everyone.  Have a great weekend!
